June 12, 2023

The Katepwa Lake Trans Canada Trail’s “Co-op Community Spaces Katepwa Hub" at Katepwa Lake is one of 15 projects that have received a portion of $1 million as a 2023 recipient of Co-op Community Spaces.

“Today, I’m pleased to announce Co-op is giving $60,000 to the Katepwa Lake Trans Canada Trail for the creation of the Co-op Community Spaces Katepwa Hub. Co-op Community Spaces aims to bring people together, creating places for everyone and building a legacy that benefits our community,” said Terry Vanmackelberg, General Manager of Prairie Co-op. “We’re happy to be a contributing partner on projects like this. They reflect the spirit and dedication of the people within our community. Thank you to the volunteers who work with Katepwa Lake Trans Canada Trail for your commitment to Fort Qu’Appelle and area residents. The extraordinary work you do on a daily basis makes a difference. Co-op is proud to be a part of bringing this project into reality. Together, we are improving the places where we meet, play, learn, and share.”

Co-op Community Spaces is designed to help protect, beautify, and improve spaces across Western Canada. Through the program, Co-op has provided $12.5 million to 175 projects since 2015 in three categories: recreation, environmental conservation, and urban agriculture. FCL administers Community Spaces on behalf of more than 160 local Co-ops operating in 600 communities.

“We are super excited about this site because it is so well-used – a really high traffic area, not only for the residents but also for visitors, right here in the provincial park,” said Carol Walsh, Chair of the Katepwa Lake Trans Canada Trail. “It will be a great place for people to know about all the amenities in the valley and what we have to offer. We will construct informational signage which will provide historical, cultural, environmental, event, and activity information. Hiking groups, campers, school classes, families, friends, residents, visitors, and new Canadians could meet to learn, plan, and experience all the outdoor recreational opportunities the District of Katepwa has to offer.”

A cheque presentation will occur on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 10:00 am at the site of the Hub – across from the entrance to the Provincial Park, on Highway 56. An opening barbecue is planned after the project is complete.
